Chicken Curry (Bengali Style)

Chicken curry was the first dish I prepared when I was in hostel and it reminds me of my college days in Bangalore . Today's chicken curry recipe is bengali style,in bengali we call it "Murgir jhol". It is super easy to cook and equally yummy.Chicken curry can be prepared in different styles and  will come up with the other varieties of chicken curry in my upcoming recipes.
Prep Time: 15 min
Cooking Time:30 min
Serving: 3

Ingredients:
  1. 500 grams of Chicken
  2. 1 large onion chopped
  3. 1 medium sized potato
  4. 2 1/2 tsps chili garlic paste
  5. 2 bay leaf
  6. 1 tsp of turmeric powder
  7. 2 tsp of chili powder
  8. 1 tsp cumin powder
  9. 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  10. 2 tsp of Bengali garam masala
  11. Whole garam masala (1 cinnamon stick, 2 green cardamom, 4 cloves)
  12. 4 tsp of mustard oil preferably
  13. 2 drops meetha attar
  14. salt as per taste
Method:

Make a paste of garlic and chilies and cut the potato in two halves and keep it aside.
Now in a small bowl add some water and soak the whole garam masala for about 2 mins.

Heat mustard oil till it smokes a little. Immediately add bay leaves and whole garam masala. As soon as you get the aroma of garam masala, add chopped onion slices to it then add the chili garlic paste and fry onion till they become light brown.

Add chicken, potato pieces and fry on high heat for about 5 mins. Now add turmeric, chili powder and tomatoes. Cook it by covering with a lid for another 7 mins in medium flame. By this time the tomatoes will soften.

Now add two cups of warm water. Cook it covered on medium heat till the potato and chicken are done(you can pressure cook it for 5mins after the pressure rises and in case of whistle cookers, till two whistles).

Sprinkle the garam masala powder, meetha attar and cover it for about 1min and serve with rice.

Note:
Meetha attar enhances the flavor of the chicken curry. It is not mandatory to add meetha attar in the curry.
